Individual rankings of top runners - limitations

September 15, 2025 Updated September 15, 2025
By James Mills, Cross Country Ratings
The ratings model derives "performance scores" by finishing place relative to strength of competition. Race times are only relevant to those who also competed on the same course on the same day. A consequence of this methodology is that the very top runners who consistently win events can only increase their rating by beating either much larger fields (thus, expanding the tail end of the logistic model) or fields with more highly rated runners. Chloe Glosser (Pekin) won the Luther Invite. It was a large field with many highly rated runners. Her performance score bumped her just ahead of Lily Denton's (St. Albert, CB) in this week's individual 1A girls rankings. Despite Lily's great performances (winning 3 events), the relative strength and size of her competition is weaker and smaller. The same can be said of Kuma Gutema's (SC North) rating. Again, he has recorded some fantastic race results, but the relative strength and size of his competition has been weaker and smaller than other 4A runners. Out of state runners are not included in the ratings model at this time. There's no perfect system for ratings estimations. Sometimes, a runner's race schedule may limit their rating capacity. It all gets settled at the end of the season.
